The five kinds of sellers
Almost everything sold for this problem is one of these five. Naming the kind tells you most of what to expect — including what it will never do.
1. Dedicated text-back services
Built for exactly this job: a missed call becomes a text. Deployd, Callita, BeepBack, SeenOnMain and TextBack all live in this kind — and the spread inside it is the whole game. Some send one canned text and stop; others run the conversation through booking, quote follow-ups, and review requests. Most of this page is about telling those apart.
2. Field-service platforms
Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan and their kin run your whole operation — scheduling, invoicing, dispatch — and texting is one feature inside. If you already run one, ask whether its missed-call text is a single auto-reply or a real conversation, and what it does after that first text. Switching platforms to fix a phone problem is a much bigger decision than adding a text-back service.
3. Phone systems and do-it-yourself tools
Quo (from $19/month per user) and similar tools hand you the parts: numbers, templates, an inbox. The price is low because the work is yours — they replace your phone system, and every setup step, template, and inbox hour lands on your evenings.
4. Live answering services
A person answers, takes a message, and relays it — about $147/month at 100 calls (AnswerAmerica: $1.47 per answered call), with the meter running on every call. The caller gets a human voice; you still get a message slip, and the booking still waits for your callback.
5. Reputation and marketing suites
Texting bundled inside a bigger marketing platform — reviews, campaigns, listings, and messaging in one contract, priced for the bundle. If all you need is the missed call caught and the job booked, you pay for a great deal you will never open.
Seven questions to ask any seller — and our answers
Ask these of every seller on this page, us included. A straight answer exists for each; a vague one is an answer too.
1. Does it work on the number my customers already call?
TextBack: yes. Conditional forwarding sends only the calls nobody answers — missed, busy, or after hours — to your text-back number. You keep your number, your carrier, and your phones; the caller never has to press 1 to earn a text, and no new toll-free number goes on your truck.
2. What happens after the first text?
One text is a notification; a conversation is a booking. With TextBack, the caller can reply 1 to book a real appointment slot, 2 for a free quote (with a photo of the problem), or 3 for a callback — or just write back in their own words. The AI drafts your replies and you approve every one; if the caller goes quiet, one gentle follow-up goes out, and a completed job earns exactly one review request.
3. When does the trial start — and when am I actually charged?
Your free 7 days start when TextBack catches your first missed call — not at signup, not at setup. If no call is ever missed, the trial simply waits and nothing is charged. Cancel during the trial and you're never charged. There is no setup fee, and the founding price is locked in for as long as you stay subscribed.
4. Who handles carrier registration for business texting?
Every legitimate business-texting service has to register with the mobile carriers before texts flow — it commonly takes a few days, and any seller promising to skip it is cutting a corner that gets numbers blocked. The guided setup handles the registration with you, and shows the real status at every step instead of promising “live today”.
5. If the caller leaves a voicemail instead, does anything still happen?
Ask every seller this — a text that only fires on some kinds of missed call leaves a gap exactly where rushed callers live. With TextBack, the trigger is the unanswered call itself, not the voicemail: the text goes out in seconds whether the caller hangs up, waits for the beep, or leaves a message and dials the next company anyway.
6. What about callers who would rather speak Spanish?
A conversation detected as Spanish stays in Spanish with TextBack — the text-back, the booking flow, quote follow-ups, reminders, and the review request. Replying ALTO stops the texts, exactly like STOP. If a share of your callers are more comfortable in Spanish, a text-back that answers in English anyway only does half this job.
7. What does it cost once it's running — and what's extra?
$49/month per location with TextBack, everything included: text-back, two-way inbox, booking, quote follow-ups, review requests, and the weekly report. Month-to-month, no contract, no cancellation fee. Compare that shape — one flat price, nothing metered — against per-minute answering and per-user DIY pricing below.
Prices, checked — for the tier that actually texts your callers
The headline price is not always the texting price. These are the tiers that actually text a missed caller, from each provider's own site.
TextBack
$49/month — founding price, locked in while you stay subscribed; no setup fee
Trial: 7-day free trial that starts at your first caught call
The full conversation: booking, quote follow-ups, review requests, bilingual EN/ES.
BeepBack
$79/month flat
Trial: First month free once texting goes live
A real done-for-you rival — its own site states its AI never composes replies, and it has no quote follow-up sequences.
Deployd
$35/month
Trial: Trial terms not stated in our October 2026 check — see deploydai.com
One canned auto-text; replies land on your own phone. Cheaper, and thinner.
Callita
$39/month flat
Trial: Trial terms not stated in our October 2026 check — see gettextback.com
The caller must press 1 before a text is sent. (Callita's product is also named “TextBack” — a different company.)
SeenOnMain
$99/month — the first tier that actually texts a missed caller
Trial: 14-day free trial, no card needed
Its $49/month tier is alerts only. Texting runs on a separate toll-free number, the caller must press 1, and texts go out between 8am and 8pm.
AnswerAmerica (live answering)
About $147/month at 100 calls ($1.47 per answered call)
Trial: —
A human takes a message; you still call back and book the job yourself.
Quo (do-it-yourself)
$19/month per user
Trial: —
Replaces your phone system; every setup step, template and inbox hour is yours.
Prices and trial terms checked October 2026 against each provider's own website — providers change their offers; check each site for current pricing.
Where TextBack is — and isn't — the right choice
Choose a live answering service if your callers routinely need a real conversation in the first minute — detailed intake, judgement about what's an emergency, callers who must be talked through a worry. A text is fast; it isn't a person.
Choose the do-it-yourself route if you're comfortable with tech and want to own the whole phone system — the parts are cheaper because the labour is yours.
Keep your field-service platform's texting if it already turns a missed call into a booked job for you — don't buy a second tool to do a job that's done.
Choose TextBack if the common pattern is yours: urgent or valuable calls arriving while you're on a roof, under a house, or in a panel — needing an answer in seconds, on your own number, in English or Spanish, that ends in a booking rather than a message slip.
